Effective July 1, 2022, the Department of Health Care Policy & Financing began soft enforcement of federal requirement 42 CFR § 455.440 which requires that claims for certain types of services contain the National Provider Identifier (NPI) of the provider who orders, prescribes, or refers a service; and that the provider is actively enrolled with Health First Colorado. This requirement will be enforced beginning September 1, 2024, resulting in the denial of claims if the attending NPI is missing or the NPI is either not enrolled with Health First Colorado, or expired.
With the pending electronic visit verification (EVV) policy change, hospice providers will not be required to collect EVV data.
The Department invites hospice providers to attend a learning session regarding the federal requirement to include the attending provider’s National Provider Identifier (NPI) number on institutional claims. We will also review a pending policy change which removes the Electronic Visit Verification (EVV) collection requirement for hospice providers. There will be time for questions and answers.
